Abstract:
India is a multilingual and multicultural nation where diverse languages play a significant role in strengthening national unity and cultural integration. As one of the major link languages of the country, Hindi serves as a medium of communication connecting different regions of India. Among the southern states, the history of the promotion and development of Hindi is particularly noteworthy in Karnataka, which occupies a significant place in this regard. The growth of Hindi in Karnataka is not confined to the modern period; rather, its roots can be traced to medieval Deccani literature, the Hindavi tradition, and various socio-cultural movements. Gulbarga, one of the major centers of Deccani literature, witnessed the early development of Hindi in its formative form. During the Maratha rule and the reigns of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan, the use of Hindi-Urdu, along with Mahatma Gandhi’s National Language Movement during the Indian freedom struggle, provided new momentum to the spread of Hindi in Karnataka.
