Abstract:
This research paper delves into the portrayal of familial bonds in the novels of Kamala Markandaya, a prominent Indian English-language writer. Markandaya's works offer a rich tapestry of familial relationships, characterised by intricate interconnections and conflicts. Through an in-depth analysis of selected novels, including "Nectar in a Sieve" and "A Handful of Rice," this paper explores the nuanced dynamics of family ties depicted by Markandaya. It examines how familial bonds serve as a lens through which broader socio-cultural themes are explored, and how they reflect the tensions between tradition and modernity in Indian society. By analysing the complexities of familial relationships in Markandaya's novels, this study aims to shed light on the multifaceted nature of human connections and the challenges they face amidst changing societal norms.
