Abstract
IMPACT OF BRITISH COLONIALISM ON INDIAN INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT BETWEEN WORLD WAR II
Dr. Manoj Singh Yadav
Volume: 5 Issue: 1 2015
Abstract:
The establishment of British rule in India disrupted the centuries-old synergy between agriculture and industry, destroying Indian handicrafts and rural industries. By the end of the 19th century, many industries had either collapsed or were on the verge of extinction. The British government exploited Indian capital through various means to hinder Indian industrial development. The British government developed means for India's industrial and commercial development that would benefit Britain. The construction of railways by the British government was one such step. This allowed Indian food and raw materials to reach ports for transportation to England, but it did not benefit Indian industries. Explaining this, Dr. Buchanan wrote, "The construction of railways made Indian materials available to the world, and this clearly helped Europeans produce for India, not enable India to produce for itself."
